FAQs

How do you pronounce your name?

My Yoruba pronunciation is terrible, but my very rubbish anglicised version is "muh-DOO-pay" and "eye-YIN-day." For a much better example of Modupe click here, and for Ayinde, click here.  â€‹

What ARE You?

Ah, the perennial question those of us from mixed backgrounds get asked. The short answer is, I'm a Black woman of mixed heritage. The longer answer is: my father was Nigerian of Yoruba origin, from Oyo state, and my mother is English, with roots in Yorkshire. My DNA includes Nigeria, Ghana, Togo, Benin, England, Sweden, Scotland, Ireland, and Germany. My spouse is of Filipino heritage (Ilocano and Tagalog).

Would you be interested in appearing on my podcast / book club / insert opportunity to talk here?

Probably! I like to talk, and so long as deadlines permit, I try to fit in as many events as I can. Just fill out my contact form (here) to get in touch.

From where should I buy your books?

I always recommend supporting your local independent book retailer in the first instance.

Where can I get a signed copy of one of your books?

At the moment, only at events. But I am looking into the possibility of bookplates and will post an update on this page once I have that in place.

Do you have any advice for querying authors?

Yes - keep going. The query trenches are one of the most gruelling parts of the traditional publishing process, and it can take a long time. I sent my first query letter 17 years before I signed with my agent. I wrote a long blog post about this subject here. (Caveat - the landscape in publishing changes fast, despite it being a slow industry, so what I've said about my experiences in 2021/22 may no longer apply by the time you're reading this.)

Can you read my unpublished manuscript / story / query package / shopping list?

Unfortunately I'm not able to read or critique unpublished work. If you're an SFF writer looking for critiques, a good place to start is Critters

Can you blurb my to-be-published SFF novel?

Unfortunately, at the moment I can't take on new blurb requests.
