Slow Horses

Writer: M. H. AyindeM. H. Ayinde

If you haven’t watched SLOW HORSES yet, I thoroughly recommend it. I recently binged all four seasons and had so much fun. Gary Oldman’s Jackson Lamb now lives rent-free in my head. He’s such a brilliant character - caring but also a bit of a sociopath, intelligent but also a screw-up. And as a huge Columbo fan, he really fits that deceptively-dishevelled mould I love so much. All the characters are great, and a large part of that is because they’re all underdogs (catnip to us Brits.) Also, the setting - administrative purgatory - is so familiar to anyone who’s worked a corporate job. I’d probably struggle to recount the actual conspiracies and crimes they get caught up in, but I CAN tell you Jackson Lamb weaponised his farts and every character made mistakes but mostly, they muddled through, and that’s what I love about this show (yep, the farts…)

One thing this show didn’t quite get right, though, was the chase scenes through Tube stations (swipe for my take on this.) Like, if you are charging down a Kings Cross escalator during rush hour, you ain’t getting past me, mate. I am extremely petty when it comes to people cutting me up when getting on the escalator or when I’m walking down (do NOT join the standing queue then try to cut in front of me on the walking side.) So if someone in plain clothes actually tried to barge past commuters in real life… well, apart from being physically impossible, it would mean WAR.

Anyway… great show. Glad there are at least two more seasons to come. I haven’t read the books but am tempted now.
